The Berkeley County Museum tells a story over 12,000 years old. This history belongs to all of us.
Our Mission
Our mission is to collect, preserve, interpret, display, and provide education about artifacts representative of Berkeley County’s history, people, institutions, culture, and development.
In 1992, The Berkeley County Museum and Heritage Center opened its doors in a new building reminiscent of an old working plantation home. The museum was the creation of a diverse group of civic leaders, preservationists, businesses, and historians. The Berkeley County Historical Society was the founding body of the Berkeley County Museum and Heritage Center. The museum is now a separate entity, governed by its own board of directors and its operations overseen by its own staff. The two organizations still maintain a close working relationship, however. Next to the museum is the old Whitesville schoolhouse, owned by the Historical Society.
